OVERWHELMED BY FAMILY PHOTOS OUTFITS? I GOT YOU.

If you're thinking about, or planning family photos, picking out outfits can be SO hard and overwhelming. There are so many ideas out there, and "Where do I even start???" come to mind?? That's where I come in to help! Being a photographer for 8 years, and having 5 kiddos of my own, I know that it is no easy task making sure everyone coordinates for photos.

First thing you need to do is pick a location/vibe for your photo session (open field, studio, woodsy, mountains, flower field, etc...). Knowing what the back drop is going to be can help narrow down what will look good!

Next you wanna go to Pinterest, and look up different color schemes!

Here's the photo I found and ran with for my family photos in 2024. I knew that my "back drop" was going to be tall yellow goat weed, and wanted fall colors. I leaned into the rust, forest green, cream, brown, beige, and black!

Photo of my family was taken by Kay Photos (https://kayphotosss.com/?fbclid=PARlRTSAMwAVdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABp1Fqg_SvTGBGY4lRI7ZewQjtBBLBScFw7XgKAXNcfTGf_p0iotEXNWu78lyj_aem_bnCoEtyNlH_g0FQTpVg5Wg)

Okay, now that we have that background work done (location and colors picked out), it was time for what feels like, the more intimidating part. Actually picking outfits!

I personally like to pick what I want to wear first, because let's be real... I could put a trash bag on my kids, and they would still be SO cute. So pick out your outfit first, and then coordinate everyone else's around yours!

When picking my kids outfits, I put thought into what colors look good on them, and their personal style/personality. Not to mention... Would my kids wear these again, so I get my money's worth??? The answer for me with picking these outfits in the photo of my family, is YES! They LOVED these outfits, and wore them again, and again, and again!

SIDE NOTE: Don't feel like you have yo buy everyone a new outfit! Look in your closet first, and then fill in IF you need to. If your budget is tight, go to a second hand store to find what you're looking for (with a general idea, and be flexible if it's not EXACTLY like the inspo photo).

Don't feel like it's selfish to pick your outfit first. You want to look and feel confident in your photos, and let's be honest... your kids aren't going to care about their outfit as much as you do. So treat yourself, and get the Pinterest worthy photos you want and deserve!

PRO TIP: Ask your photographer if they have any suggestions of outfit colors for the location you're shooting at! They will be able to help spark some ideas for you!

xoxo,

Kirsten Smith
